4 things you should know about work and disability in the UK
Did you know that almost half of the working-age population with disabilities in the UK are employed? Studies over the years have shown that diversity is a core component of an optimal workforce. Diversity also brings value to stockholders and employees and gives organisations a competitive edge. According to Pacific Prime’s latest Global Employee Benefits Trends Report, most employees consider their workplace unfair. Gone are the days when employers could turn a blind eye to pressing diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI) problems; employers must strive to understand the different layers of fairness and equality in the workplace.
In this Pacific Prime UK article, we will learn more about working with disability in the UK.
1. Working with disability
If you have a disability and are worried about how it may limit your job prospects or finding work, we’ve got good news for you. There is a lot of guidance and support training available in the UK to help you get employed. For instance, government-backed schemes and schemes like Change100 bring top UK employers and talented disabled students together.
2. Know your rights
Your disability should not limit you from finding employment legally. Whatever your physical or learning limitations are, you have a right to equality, fairness, respect, and understanding at your workplace. Equality Act 2010 protects employees and job seekers with disabilities against any discrimination. You are legally entitled to fair pay and treatment, and employers must make workspaces accessible to you.
3. Seek help to find work
The government of the UK has promised to work closely with doctors and employers to help people with disabilities find work. Learn more about who can help you with finding a job here. In addition, your local Jobcentre Plus can arrange an interview with a work coach (a person specially trained to help disabled people find suitable jobs).
4. Government support
Here are some government schemes that can help you find suitable work with disabilities in the UK.
Work and Health Programme
This scheme can help you find and keep a job while providing personal support for your needs. Learn more about the Work and Health Programme here, or talk to a local Jobcentre Plus work coach.
Access to Work
The Access to Work scheme provides financial support for your work needs, such as special equipment at work, travel expenses, and more. Find out more about the scheme here.
How can employers help disabled workers?
Employers should learn about recruiting disabled people and helping them stay at work. If you are disabled or become disabled while at work, your employer should do everything in their capacity to help you stay in your job. Here are some of the possible changes your employer should consider:
- Transferring you to another post where you start or continue to work effortlessly.
- Making changes to your workplace.
- Providing a reader or interpreter and more.
