But beyond <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/travel\/2022\/06\/15\/uk-airport-chaos-brexit-blamed-as-thousands-of-brits-are-still-stuck-abroad\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flight cancellations and travel chaos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has been reported in a number of airports from Heathrow to Manchester and beyond due to the post-pandemic surge in demand, there\u2019s another potential consideration for British passport holders: the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/etias-eu-visa-waiver\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Whether it\u2019s familiarising yourself with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.which.co.uk\/news\/article\/eu-passport-renewal-expiry-rules-uk-aRaVG6j5PpyJ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new rules around passport validity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, queuing up in the non-EU lanes at immigration, or even substituting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/using-the-nhs\/healthcare-abroad\/apply-for-a-free-uk-global-health-insurance-card-ghic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EHIC with the GHIC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, British passport holders wanting to visit EU countries are no doubt missing the good old days. But did you know that travel to the EU is set to become even more troublesome with the ETIAS?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Travel Information Authorization System (ETIAS)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British travellers visiting the US are familiar with the country\u2019s Electronic System for Travel Authorization (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESTA), where non-visa nationals under the Visa Waiver Program are required to fill out an online form and pay a fee before receiving authorization to travel. The ETIAS is based on a similar concept and, after being pushed back from a late 2022 launch, will debut in May 2023. Here are some frequently asked questions (FAQs):<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who will need an ETIAS?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EU citizens and residents will be exempt from the ETIAS as they can enjoy freedom of movement around the block. The ETIAS will apply to citizens of countries that previously didn\u2019t need a visa to visit the EU, affecting 60 countries, including the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: There are no changes for citizens of countries that generally need a visa to visit the EU.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will the system work?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike applying for a visa, which can involve a trip to the visa application centre and providing biometric information, the ETIAS will be a largely automatic IT system. For an estimated 95% of applicants, approval will be granted within minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> Some applicants in very exceptional cases could be waiting up to a month for approval. If authorization is denied for whatever reason, applicants have the right to appeal the decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will the authorization be for a single trip or multiple trips?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fortunately, ETIAS authorization will be valid for an unlimited number of entries into the EU over three years. But those with ETIAS authorization must abide by immigration rules and not overstay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: At present, third-party nationals can\u2019t stay in the block for more than 90 days in any given 180-day period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the costs involved?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those between the ages of 18 and 70, the cost of an ETIAS is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u20ac7 or $7.35. However, it\u2019s unclear whether those below 18 or above 70 will benefit from a subsidised rate or be able to apply for free.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: To provide some comparison, the US\u2019s ESTA costs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$21.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travelling soon?
