The virus belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus, which also includes the variola virus (which causes smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine) and cowpox virus. First discovered in 1958 in colonies of monkeys kept for research, the first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mpox is the new term for monkeypox<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of November 2022, mpox is the preferred term for monkeypox as <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/11\/28\/health\/monkeypox-renamed-mpox\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated by the World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/a>. The name change is a result of scientists and experts asking for a novel term since the latest outbreak to prevent discrimination and stigma that could cause people to avoid testing and vaccination. WHO mentioned that the term \u2018monkeypox\u2019 will remain searchable in the International Classification of Diseases and both names will continue to be used simultaneously for a one-year period while the original term is phased out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of monkeypox<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The World Health Organisation (WHO) has come up with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2022-DON385#:~:text=WHO%20has%20developed,updated%20as%20necessary)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">list of monkeypox symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for persons of any age residing in a country where monkeypox isn\u2019t endemic. If you have an unexplained acute rash AND any of the below symptoms, it\u2019s a suspected case of monkeypox.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acute onset of fever (&gt;38.5<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00b0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lymphadenopathy (swollen lymph nodes)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myalgia (muscle and body aches)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthenia (profound weakness)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please note that the UK government describes monkeypox as usually being a <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/monkeypox-cases-confirmed-in-england-latest-updates#:~:text=remains%20under%20investigation.-,Monkeypox%20is%20a%20rare,to%20the%20general%20population.,-One%20of%20the\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mild, self-limiting illness<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with most people recovering within a few weeks, but also acknowledges that severe illness can occur in some individuals.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does monkeypox spread?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the natural reservoir of monkeypox is unknown, it\u2019s thought that African rodents and non-human primates (such as monkeys) harbour the virus and infect people. Today, monkeypox cases are mainly found in the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with Central and Western African countries like Cameroon, Central African Republic, C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire, Gabon, Liberia, Nigeria, Republic of Congo and Sierra Leone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can also spread to other countries via travel, which is what happened on May 7th, 2022. As the UK government confirmed, the patient in question had a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/monkeypox-cases-confirmed-in-england-latest-updates#:~:text=7%20May%202022,confirmed%20in%20England\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent travel history from Nigeria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is where they are believed to have contracted the infection, before travelling to the UK. That being said, there is now <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/monkeypox-spreading-in-uk-through-community-transmission-with-new-cases-identified-daily-says-senior-doctor-12618792\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">community transmission of monkeypox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the UK. Put simply, this means that cases are being discovered amongst those with no travel history to infected regions and countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community transmission\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The WHO stipulates that the monkeypox virus is transmitted from one person to another by close contact with lesions, body fluids, respiratory droplets and contaminated materials such as bedding. As such, you should protect yourself by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding close contact with monkeypox patients and with wild, sick or dead animals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making sure all food that contains animal meat is cooked thoroughly\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking to your GP if you\u2019re at risk of contracting monkeypox\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please also note that the CDC confirms that there\u2019s <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/treatment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no proven, safe monkeypox treatment<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the moment.
